Walter,
One of the most amazing things going on in systems biology is perhaps not just what you mention. One of the most amazing feats in reverse engineering is the Connectivity Map at Broad Institute. Web 3.0 and Personalized Medicine is already here. It is just not evenly distributed....

I'm not suggesting that the Semantic Web will be the essence of the next generation of the Internet, but it is critical for the evolution of systems biology and thus personalized medicine.

A principal concern in the life sciences today is how to deal with the exponential growth in the amount of data being captured from high-throughput technologies. The problem is how to manipulate, filter and manage valuable insights from volumes of information. A unified standard platform is required that fosters worldwide interoperability and provides semantics in a machine-interpretable way to documents and data on the web. For the life sciences, the language to build on is the Semantic Web.

Clearly there is much to be said regarding Web 3.0 in the context of the user experience and the business model. Your article makes a valid point. However, from my perspective as a doctor and scientist, I'm more interested in the enabling technology.

I have developed my own definition of Web 3.0, and differ on the viewpoint that Semantic Web would be the essence of the next generation of the Internet. Please read this: Web 3.0 = (4C + P + VS). And for a series of examples, you can see my analysis of the Personal Finance category from a Web 3.0 perspective.

Suggest you review your offering in the context of the user experience and the business model, instead of the enabling technology.

Dear Walter!

It's one of the best writings on the subject. You've collected all the important facts and sites. I especially loved the long explanation of personalized medicine. Thank you for mentioning my posts and to note that I've been working on the web 2.0 - medicine relationship for a long time now. You're the first who realized it. :)
