Prevention isn't just about money. People obviously rather not get sick in the first place. This is true even if curing them wouldn't cost any more than preventing the sickness.

The shift from treating sickness to preventing sickness is a significant one...

I've never thought of it that way, but those are some very good points. It almost reads like something you'd see on the Freakonomics blog.

Very eye opening. It certainly makes sense, but I think few of us have thought of our health-care future in these terms.

Regardless, the benefits of living as healthy a life as possible outweigh the costs. Thanks for the well thought-out post.

Just being alive is expensive. Trying to stay healthy is expensive. Eating the right foods and working out is expensive. No matter how you pay the bill, it will be paid on way or another.

However, my wife is a nurse and her experiences over the past two years on the floor she is on now has made me take a different view of my health. Based on her experience, overweight people in their 60's are more likely to have serious complications or death from relatively simple medical procedures. Their recovery time in the hospital is greatly extended and additional medical issues are more likely with these people.

On the other hand, those of the same age group who are not overweight tend to have rapid recoveries with little or no additional medical issues.

Obviously, being healthy is the answer to a better quality of life but, like I said, being healthy can be very expensive.

You can pay as you go or, pay later, possibly with your life.
