Aside from the many health benefits bananas provide, they offer a big advantage over other fruits because of their portability. They fast and easy to prepare, and can be taken anywhere. A banana is usually the first fruit I grab for a snack before or after I exercise.

Try a banana in a smoothie, or smothered in peanut butter with chocolate chips!

Thanks for the article.

Hi Scott - The research is still ongoing. A number of papers have been published by the Bapat lab in India over the past couple of years regarding hepatitis B surface antigen expression in banana plants as well as soybean and tobacco cell suspension cultures.

I just came across an interesting article on www.sciam.com that discusses why bananas do not produce seeds, but are still able to produce fruit.

Scientific America: How do seedless fruits arise and how are they propagated?

I recall about 6 years ago there were some discussions about the possibility of using bananas as a delivery tool for vaccines. I believe that the largest concern was dosage control due to various sizes of bananas. I am not really sure where the current state of research is on this topic or if it has been abandoned. Any thoughts on this topic?

Wow, I didn’t know bananas did all that!

I really appreciate that you show references at the end of your articles. Most health sites don’t do that and I have no way of knowing whether the information is true or not.

Great job Walter! I’ll be a frequent visitor!
