My father has always worked in a healthcare environment, and he has always laughed when we brought home antibacterial products from the stores. I guess this proves he was right all along in telling us to just scrub thoroughly with regular soap and water.

Hi Sue - I don't know of an official recommendation by the CDC/NIH regarding antibacterial gel use in schools. However, I did find some information that you may find useful. In a letter to the editor of Emerging Infectious Diseases, Reynolds et al. conducted a handwashing trial to evaluate the appropriate concentration of alcohol in a non-healthcare setting. They tested tap water, 40% ethanol and a range of ethanol gel concentrations, and found that 40% ethanol gel is less effective bacterial antiseptic than 60% ethanol gel. A minimum of 5 trials were performed with various concentrations of ethanol; 62% ethanol gel resulted in the greatest mean decrease in colony forming units (CFU). Hope this helps!

Is there a "official" recommendation CDC/NIH, etc. regarding use of antibacterial gels in schools. Our elementary school in my town wants to install dispensers throughout the school for the students to use. I'm recommending now but an official (health agency) statement would be great...resistance, ineffective on dirty hands, soap cheaper....etc.

Just a thought about the water temperature - most hospitals / clinics have hot, rather than warm, water running from their 'hot' taps as a preventative measure for Legionnaires' Disease. Most healthcare professionals who are washing their hands umpteen times a shift end up using water that is actually hot, increasing the risk for drying and cracking of the skin and soreness - another reason for cutting corners in hand hygeine?
Keep up the good work - JABH
