I had the flu a couple of year ago and I said that I would never miss a flu shot again either. It is easy to see once you have had it why there are so many deaths associated with it. You are so weakened after that just about anything can set in. I certainly agree that it takes awhile to get back to feeling normal.

Hi Allison - that's a really good question. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any information to answer it. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth getting shots here in the U.S., since the flu vaccine demonstrates some efficacy even when the circulating strain doesn't match the vaccine. Once you arrive in Austria, if you discover that the anticipated strains (and thus the flu shot) were different, I see no reason why you couldn't get immunized again.

Good luck with your move!

My family and I will be moving to Austria in the middle of this flu season (likely in December). I'm pregnant, and my daughter is 3, so we definitely fit the hit list. My question is this: are the anticipated strains for North American and for Europe the same? (ie, is it worth getting shots here?)

Great article.

My doctor wanted to hospitalize me, when I came down with the flu 4yrs. ago. I've never missed a flu shot since. There is a huge difference between the flu and a cold. I don't want to go through that again. The recovery period seems to drag on too, for some time after.
